The year was 1777, less than a year after the human colonies had declared their independence from the land they called ‘great Britain’ now they seemed to do what humans do best, make war.
When the furless ones arrived we hoped that they would soon leave, after all, the land was already inhabited by the various tribes. The Arapaho, the apache, the Ute, and us, the ones that all tribes fear and respect, ‘the moonborn’.
Our hopes were dashed however when they began to build permanent settlements, calling them ‘colonies’. So we were content to stick to the shadows, living on the edge of these colonies until the time would come when these greedy humans would leave. Then of course they began to make war with the place they came from, as a young rebellious cub would make war with his parents.
Now our young couldn't sleep, the sounds of war were loud and ongoing, we had only one option at this point, if we were to be rid of these new humans and all their problems they continued to cause, we had to drive them out.
Our plan was to make our strike after their next battle, when we saw something that was truly despicable, cowardice. One of the humans was fleeing the field of battle, truly a shameful display.
The coward had hidden itself in a cave only several feet from our position, so I decided that this coward would be the first death. As I crept along slowly, making sure not to alert the human, I heard it weeping, hah, even this despicable creature was ashamed of what he had done, I smiled inwardly.
As I got to the entrance, I could see this repulsive thing sitting there curled up as a child weeping, and... Holding something in its hand. My curiosity took over and I got close enough to see what exactly he was looking at, a picture of a human female, by the way it was staring at the paper it was obviously its mate. He was constantly whispering ‘I’m sorry’ to it, as though the female in the picture could hear and acknowledge the words the human was saying.
Then suddenly it detected my presence, whirled around dropping the picture in the process and pointed its weapon at me. Upon seeing me however it fell flat onto its back dropping the weapon it had been clutching to so feebly.
“Wha- Wha- What the heck are you?!”
I laughed at this pathetic creature. It could not stand seeing the sight of glory before him, yet I also, felt a small pang of sympathy for it. This thing was out there on the field of battle, yet that was not where its mind was. Its thoughts were of its family.
“I am the one who helps you. But you must decide how I help, I can either help you die right here in this cave, where no creature will find your body for several moons, or if you make a promise with us, we can help you and your feeble human friends end this war.”
It looked confused. “What? But...why would you do that?”
“I shook my head and knelt down to its level. “We tire of the sounds of war that your kind has been making for far too long; it is obvious that you are barely managing to continue this futile fight. But if you swear upon the blood of your kind to leave us in peace and give back the lands you have taken, then we shall in return teach your kind how to use the land to your advantage. Make your decision human.”
My eyes watched it closely as it considered its options. Finally it looked up at me
“Help us. Please teach us how to win the war.”
“And you will give back the lands you have taken from us?”
It hesitated. “What lands have we stolen from you?”
I thought it over for a moment, “We will leave you the original villages you have made when your kind first arrived here. But you must confine yourselves to them; you will make no more progress westward. Those lands are already claimed.”
“Then it’s a deal, I’m sure I can work something out with Washington.”
I stood up and motioned for the creature to follow. “Leave your weapon, not that it could possibly harm us, but I don't want the others to think you still have some thought of killing us.”
It did as I had instructed, following me outside. At first the others were confused, but once I had explained the situation to them, they all agreed that if the humans simply stayed where they were, then life would be peaceful again.
We instructed it to return to this place with those that survived the skirmish, but not to reveal our existence or come armed, surprisingly the creature managed to do it, and the gasps of surprise from the humans were well worth it as were the sights of their faces contorted with fear, as the first human felt it was his duty to calm the others down. Once that was all over we began teaching them how to use the land and its many utilities to their own advantage, hiding in trees to use their ranged weapons on unsuspecting foes, using the bushes and dead leaves to make them indistinguishable from the surrounding forest. It took a few weeks but eventually they had learned all we had to teach. So we told them to spread this knowledge to the other humans, and to ensure that they kept their end of the bargain.
I only wish I could have known how much I would regret that decision.
okay so this is my submission for the Werewriters contest for this month, I know it's kinda almost late but hey I wanted to see what I was up against lol.
Now as for the title I couldn't think of anything else (just read Jack London so I've got that on my mind)
Let me know if you like it (even if it is a bit short) and let me know how I can do better because I cant improve without your help.

To quote Emperor Palpatine "Young fool... only now, at the end, do you understand..."

Very well done. I only noticed one error, and that was a missing period at the end of "My eyes watched it closely as it considered its options. Finally it looked up at me". Other than that, good short story.
